![]() ![]() When speckled with another color, the green chrysoprase is called plasma. This description of chrysoprase as a purple stone was distinct to Marbod’s account. Chrysoprase is the green variety of chalcedony, more approriately called prase in a darker hue. In a curious part of an 11th-century lapidary, Marbod speaks of a purple chrysoprase sprinked with yellow specks. Under the name agate, purple-and-white variegated chalcedony was found in Troezen of Greece, while a paler variety came from Corinthia. The Romans obtained their purple jasper from Turkey, which also produced a purplish blue variety. In addition, jasper and agate that display patches of purple would likewise fall into this category. These opaque and translucent chalcedonies must have been the purple jaspers that the Romans esteemed the most. ![]() The amethyst of the ancients was always transparent thus, purple quartz that is translucent or opaque would be classified as jasper. Hence, in the old nomenclature, what we call lavender amethyst and banded amethyst would fall under jasper. Jasper was not necessarily opaque then, but was rather often translucent. In Rome, the best jasper had a shade of purple. The ancients knew translucent or opaque quartz, as we define chalcedony today, but under different names. While best known in white and blue, chalcedony also produces purple gemstones. A lilac chalcedony, better known today as “lavender amethyst” 8 Purple Chalcedony Though mostly opaque, sugilite also occurs in translucent crystals, which would be more suitable for jewelry. Spots of dark purple standing out from light areas bring down the value of the stone. However, sugilite frequently occurs with a mottled appearance. The deeper its color, the more valuable a sugilite is. Grape jelly purple is a color that the stone is prized for. Sugilite is a mostly opaque stone ranging in shade from pink to purple. The purple gem obtained its name from Ken-ichi Sugi, the Japanese petrologist who discovered the mineral in the Iwagi Islet of Japan. Sugilite is a purple stone discovered only in 1944. 9th Most Beautiful of Purple Gemstones: Sugilite From lite – Simon Eugster, CC BY-SA 3.0 9 Sugilite Since the stone likewise occurs in a pale shade, the Turkish gem also goes by the name lavender jade. The purple gem occurs in Bursa, a region in Turkey, hence the names turkiyenite and Turkish purple jade. The warm-colored inclusion is cinnabar, a toxic ore of mercury, which would have been rather dangerous had the stone been actually powdered and swallowed as Aldobrando prescribed for the cure of the liver. This comes in rock consisting of a mixture of jadeite and quartz. Jade resembling the purple stone that, as Aldobrando described, bears yellowish patches does occur. In another variety, a yellow stain with pittings and hollows occurs in the midst of the purple color. He says further that there were stones of a darker hue, with protuberances and bands of yellow, as well as black spots. Aldobrando says that the stone usually has a purple shade, almost like porphyry, with various figures of herbs, flowers, knots and Arabic characters in a yellow color. Cleandro Arnobio, to whom was sent a specimen of jadeite from America prior to 1602, relates an account about the stone by Aldobrando, a physician and physicist of Bologna, Italy. While purple jade found use as a gem only since the 1980s, there came an allusion to this stone three centuries earlier. Also known as turkiyenite, this purple stone ranges in shade from lavender to dark purple. ![]() ![]() Simplifying a bit, a neuron's dilemma is “to fire or not to fire” or “to burst or not to burst.” Together, these energetic and informational constraints force neurons to fire sparsely and selectively: bursting only in response to a small subset of inputs while remaining silent or only firing sporadic spikes in response to a majority of other inputs ( Balduzzi and Tononi, 2013). Informationally, a neuron is a tight bottleneck: it can receive a very large number of different input patterns over thousands of synapses, but through its single axon it produces only a few different outputs. Neurons should fire sparsely and selectivelyĮnergetically, a neuron is faced with a major constraint: firing is more expensive than not firing and firing strongly (bursting) is especially expensive ( Attwell and Gibb, 2005). By renormalizing synaptic strength, sleep reduces the burden of plasticity on neurons and other cells while restoring neuronal selectivity and the ability to learn, and in doing so enhances signal-to-noise ratios (S/N), leading to the consolidation and integration of memories. Increased synaptic strength also reduces the selectivity of neuronal responses and saturates the ability to learn. In other words, sleep is “the price we pay for plasticity.” Increased synaptic strength has various costs at the cellular and systems level including higher energy consumption, greater demand for the delivery of cellular supplies to synapses leading to cellular stress, and associated changes in support cells such as glia. SHY proposes that the fundamental function of sleep is the restoration of synaptic homeostasis, which is challenged by synaptic strengthening triggered by learning during wake and by synaptogenesis during development ( Fig. Here we review a proposal concerning what this function might be - the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis or SHY ( Tononi and Cirelli, 2003, 2006). The risks inherent in forgoing vigilance, and the opportunity costs of not engaging in more productive behaviors, suggest that allowing the brain to go periodically ‘off-line’ must serve some important function. ![]() Its hallmark is a reversible disconnection from the environment, usually accompanied by immobility. Sleep occupies a large fraction of the day, it occurs from early development to old age, and it is present in all species carefully studied so far, from fruit flies to humans. However, what exactly is being restored by sleep has proven harder to explain. After a good night of sleep, brain and body feel refreshed and we are restored to normal function. Why we need to sleep seems clear: without sleep, we become tired, irritable, and our brain functions less well. This review considers the rationale and evidence for SHY and points to open issues related to sleep and plasticity. This happens through the off-line, comprehensive sampling of statistical regularities incorporated in neuronal circuits over a lifetime. Activity-dependent down-selection of synapses can also explain the benefits of sleep on memory acquisition, consolidation, and integration. During sleep, spontaneous activity renormalizes net synaptic strength and restores cellular homeostasis. This increases cellular needs for energy and supplies, decreases signal-to-noise ratios, and saturates learning. During a waking episode, learning statistical regularities about the current environment requires strengthening connections throughout the brain. But why does the brain need to disconnect from the environment for hours every day? The synaptic homeostasis hypothesis (SHY) proposes that sleep is the price the brain pays for plasticity. ![]() Sleep is universal, tightly regulated, and its loss impairs cognition. ![]() ![]() #EPPC23 brings together the Microsoft Power Platform Communities for three days of unrivaled days in-person learning, connections and inspiration, featuring three inspirational keynotes, six expert full-day tutorials, and over eighty-five specialist sessions, with guest speakers including April Dunnam, Dona Sarkar, Ilya Fainberg, Janet Robb, Daniel Laskewitz, Rui Santos, Jens Christian Schrøder, Marco Rocca, and many more. To be honest, not every frame was fully used. I expected SilverFast 8.5 to take at least 20 seconds to find and create every frame, but the operation finished in less than five (5!) seconds. The photos were found with no exception and the frames were created as accurately as I’d do it manually. The results were stunning for two reasons: I used slides and filmstrips exposed by different cameras, each in their associated scanner holder. I’m always very sceptical when the word “intelligent” is used in a claim, so I tried it out with a whole bunch of slides and filmstrips. It searches the scanner flatbed or film holder for photos, slides and filmstrips and is meant to create the appropriate frames in a breeze. The IFF+Engine (Intelligent Frame Finding) has much in common with AI (Artificial Intelligence). The software that effortlessly recognises your car’s licence plate so the police can deliver your fine at your doorstep in hours instead of days or weeks, is somewhat related to SilverFast 8.5’s most baffling new feature: IFF+Engine. One area where intelligent algorithms are really working today is pattern recognition. We have seen it all: from intelligent databases to intelligent noise-reduction algorithms. The word “intelligent” is often abused when it comes to software. Nevertheless, even if you can’t afford or have the space to operate one of these, SilverFast 8.5 will work perfectly with other film or flatbed scanners and it will get the best out of them. They are a perfect match for SilverFast 8.5 because with scanners the quality of the scan is dictated by the hardware and these are the best scanners for all-round photo scanning. Although SilverFast 8.5 will work with any modern photo scanner, my favourites are the Epson Perfection V800, V850, (and V750 and V700). ![]() SilverFast 8.5 will control and work with most scanners, but it’s obvious that you are best off to match the best scanner with the best software. Testing multiple products, I tried to be as objective as possible. What did I pay attention to when picking stereo receivers? You can also check the best receivers for turntable. Since there are many nuances to consider while shopping around, I decided to study the matter in detail to provide you with a professional view on the topic. If you are reading my review, you have probably studied many stereo receivers’ reviews and are clearly in the mood to purchase such a product. Some users even hook up a stereo receiver to a turntable or use its radio capabilities (given a model comes with an AM/FM antenna) to listen to music. But even the most advanced audiophile stereo receiver will not provide surround sound. Such units are solely focused on pleasing music lovers. Many avid audiophiles search for the best stereo receiver because this channel combination allows getting the most powerful sound and savoring the slightest tone fluctuations. A stereo receiver is an audio system component with two channels (left and right) and two amplifiers for each channel. ![]() |
